Tesco undervalues professional eye tests

Supermarket giant Tesco has been forced to remove a recent campaign for their own eye tests that made cost comparisons to their own brand baked beans at 24 pence.

The Association of Independent Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians likened the campaign to Tesco’s ‘Ratner’ moment and commented: ‘One of the AIO’s major campaigns is to stop and optical outlet demeaning our professional worth by offering ‘free eye tests’. The only professional way forward is to charge realistic fees for our services’.

Charging a fair professional rate for a highly specialised service is the only way to ensure the ongoing high standards of Optometrists. Promoting supposedly free eye tests undervalues and undermines a service that (when done properly) requires ongoing professional development and investment in cutting edge testing equipment to provide a complete picture of your eye health.
